Apple and Potato-Powered Lamps

Artist, Caleb Charland, is reviving our sense of wonder with his experiments in magnetism, gravity, electricity, fire and food.

Most intriguing are Charland’s lamps, which he powers using fruits and vegetables. Charland has wired an apple tree in his New England orchard and many bowls of potatoes, oranges and lemons, each with copper wires. The acidity in the fruits and vegetables reacts with the metal to create an electrical current that then lights up one of Charlands table lamps. Charland even captures his beautiful science experiments in photographs, which have a magical, rustic feel to them.

“By exploring the world at hand, from the basement to the backyard, I have found a resonance in things,” Charland says. “An energy vibrates in that space between our perceptions of the world and the potential the mind senses for our interventions within the world.”
